F1 British GP live commentary and updates - FP3

Follow all the minute-by-minute action from final practice at F1's British Grand Prix in Silverstone

Live Commentary

By: Filip Cleeren

See you soon

We will be back with our live blog to see who grabs pole for the 2025 British Grand Prix.

Action resumes at 15:00 BST (10:00 EST - 16:00 CET).

Hopefully that will be cracker. Until then!

Read the report

Here's your recap, kindly provided by Jake Boxall-Legge, from an eventful FP3 session that is setting up an intriguing qualifying battle later.

F1 British GP: Leclerc tops red-flagged FP3 as margins prove tight

Leclerc ahead of Piastri and Verstappen

That's a chaotic end to this FP3 session, which is topped by Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, with a minimal gap to Piastri, Verstappen and Norris.

That's nicely poised for a tasty qualifying session later, rain or shine. Let's see what the weather does.

Meanwhile Oliver Bearman did actually hit the wall! He spins after locking the rear tyres under braking into the pitlane and pushes the tyre barrier. He did manage to limp back to his pit stall.

The replays shows Bortoleto has a huge snap, corrects it and then has the Sauber spit him out the other way into a pirouette.

The Brazilian hasn't actually hit the wall, his car's suspension and front wing just broke on a big bump as he went into the runoff area. That might need looking at.

Red flag

But another red flag has put paid to those runs. It's Sauber man Gabriel Bortoleto, who was first out, who has caused the stoppage.

It looks like he has a fairly big smash at Becketts, but he is okay.

Green flag

There's a big queue at the end of pitlane as we are getting one last salvo of soft tyre laps.

"We've missed the boat here," says Nico Hulkenberg as he is waiting for a gap to slot into the fast lane. But Norris is kind enough to let him merge.

Session will resume at :31 for four more minutes. Some fans are already calling it quits, but we should be getting a bit more running.

There's a broken winglet on the entry to Stowe, which is being removed by the marshals.

Red flag

We were watching Lewis Hamilton on a potentially fastest lap, but the session has been halted.

Leclerc responds

Charles Leclerc pips Piastri by half a tenth as he grabs the lead with a 1m25.498s. Are we getting a three-way fight for pole later today?

His team-mate Yuki Tsunoda is clearly still fighting that Red Bull with lots of small corrections, but he just moved up to fifth which is encouraging to see, albeit half a second off.

Verstappen rapid

Oh hello, Max Verstappen has just split the two McLaren in second. No handbrakes were pulled on that lap, he appears to be in the fight!

McLaren on top

That answers that.

There are cheers for Norris as he grabs P1, but Piastri then finds another 0.040s.

Piastri leads with a 1m25.566, Norris is second with a 1m25.606s followed by Leclerc, Russell and Verstappen.

Norris and Piastri have received fresh soft tyres, so we might be getting a better picture of what McLaren is all about today.

Leclerc is two tenths slower than his own benchmark, while Russell vaults over Verstappen to second.

Well, Verstappen just likened his brake bias setting to pulling a handbrake on the Red bull team radio, so it's not like it's all perfect either.

Meanwhile, those few drops of rain haven't deterred Leclerc from embarking on another qualifying simulation run.

Rain reported

Leclerc" "A little bit of rain in Turn 9, but nothing big."

That's Copse, not the best spot to suddenly encounter a slippery surface.

Albon has also had a bit of a moment with an Aston Martin stuck in the middle of the track through Copse. Expletives follow.

Verstappen stays second after a purple first sector, before he gets very loose in the dirty air of Pierre Gasly through Becketts. He gives the Alpine driver a sarcastic thumbs up on the hangar Straight.

The four-time champ was not best pleased with the balance and lack of grip on his Red Bull yesterday. But as is often the case, Red Bull seems to have found a few solutions overnight for the understeer he suffered in the slower corners.

Ollie Berman has gone sixth ahead of the two McLarens, meanwhile. Good lap for the British rookie.

It's a purple first sector for Hamilton, but he then loses a bit of time in sector two as he settles for fourth. 1m26.332s is his lap.

Leclerc goes faster

No such difficulties for Leclerc, it seems, as the Monegasque dips below the 1m26 mark with a 1m25.922s.

Verstappen has also gone quicker and is now two tenths behind, followed by Russell and Antonelli.

Both Norris and Piastri go quicker, but it's only good for fifth and sixth for now. Are the cooler conditions making it harder for them to switch on that McLaren?

A quiet start for McLaren thus far, but Piastri is just launching himself for another push lap.

Not a bad start for Max Verstappen, who sets a 1m26.499s to grab second, 0.005s behind Leclerc.

Behind Verstappen and Hamilton, Russell and Norris are now fourth and fifth.

Hamilton sets a 1m26.529s on softs to go quicker, but then Leclerc bangs in a 1m26.494s to take top.

Action picks up

Norris is followed out the pitlane by about a dozen cars, including all the frontrunners. We are finally getting a bit more action.

The Briton gives a friendly wave to his own Lando Norris grandstand, which is a sea of fans sporting neon green hats and shirts.

Norris has pinpointed Ferrari as McLaren's main threat for the weekend after Leclerc and Hamilton looked strong on race pace.

"The Ferraris have been very, very quick today and they shall be tomorrow,” Norris said. “We have a bit of work to do. To be honest, it looks maybe a bit too good today. Like always, Ferrari catch up into P3 like they did last weekend."

Lando Norris has joined what has been a very quiet opening stage of this session.

It's a 1m27.351s for Hamilton on soft tyres. We were just watching his onboards through Copse, Maggotts and Becketts. Doesn't get old, does it? Brilliant.

There's Lewis Hamilton, who had a hugely encouraging Friday with Ferrari.

Max Verstappen was just seen nattering away with a guest of his, so he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to head out.

"In balance overall better, but still no grip," is Gasly's early verdict.

Alpine has had a pretty glum Friday as Gasly and Colapinto were languishing down in 18th and 20th respectively. They are back out early to see if their setup changes have worked.

They have no upgrades, mind you, so they are up against it aginst the improved cars fielded by their midfield competitors.

Rain incoming?

The skies over Silverstone look rather ominous. It is cooler than yesterday, too, with air temperatures hovering around 20C.

Mercedes will be happy to hear it, given how much it struggles in the heat. Will we get proper rain too?

Four drivers have headed out straight away: The two Alpines of Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, and the two Astons driven by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

We've started with a five minute delay for marshals to clean up the track.

That works out as we had some internet issues on our side as well, our apologies.

Welcome

Hello and welcome for the Saturday running at the 2025 British Grand Prix!
