Live Commentary

By: Filip Cleeren

See you in Spa

That's the perfect place to wrap up our live coverage after a chaotic 2025 British Grand Prix. There will be a lot to talk about in the paddock, and therefore a lot to read about on our website tonight and tomorrow, so keep an eye on that!

Thanks for following along with us and see you in two weeks' time for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. Love to see it.

Bye for now!

Podium

This race is starting how it began, with a rendition of God Save the King.

Lando Norris soaks up the praise as McLaren's understated aero genius Peter Prodromou gets a well deserved turn collecting the contructors' trophy.

Piastri is having to explain his penalty to Hulkenberg in the cooldown room, while they are watching Hadjar going into the back of Antonelli after that very wet restart.

"I don't know why they went green," Norris and Piastri both says.

Standings

1 - Piastri: 234
2 - Norris: 226
3 - Verstappen: 165
4 - Russell: 147
5 - Leclerc: 119

1 - McLaren: 442
2 - Ferrari: 222
3 - Mercedes: 210
4 - Red Bull: 172
5 - Williams: 59

Norris: "As good as it gets"

"This is as good as it gets. This is where it all started for me. Incredible race, stressful as always. I tried to look at the crowd on the last lap to take it all in."

Piastri: "I'll get myself in trouble"

"I'm not going to say much, I'll get myself in trouble," says Piastri. "Congrats to Nico, that's the highlight of the day... Apparently you can't brake behind the safety car any more."

Boy, is he FURIOUS.

Hulkenberg: "I was in denial"

"It's been a long time coming, isn't it?," says Hulkenberg. "It's pretty surreal, crazy conditions. A survival fight for most of the race but we were on it with the right calls and the right tyres, no mistakes."

"I was in denial until the last pitstop. I knew Lewis was going to go for it at home. But, sorry guys, it's also my day."

Unbelievable scenes in parc ferme as the Sauber mechanics swamp Hulkenberg.

Norris is soaking in a win he has dreamt of as a little kid. "Enjoy. Enjoy," his mother tells him after a long embrace.

Norris closes to within eight points of Piastri. Game on.

Gasly also picked off Stroll on the final lap to take a fantastic sixth in what is most definitely not a top six car. Great boost for Alpine.

The remaining points go to Albon, Alonso and Russell.

Lewis Hamilton has to settle for fourth after a valiant effort, but will be ruing that early final stop.

Max Verstappen has nicked fifth off Lance Stroll at the end.

Hulkenberg takes third

Nico Hulkenberg is a podium finisher at last! With Sauber!

As the famous saying goes: 239th time's a charm.

LANDO NORRIS WINS THE BRITISH GP

He's done it! Lando Norris has won at home in Silverstone. It's a 1-2 for McLaren.

Lap 52/52 - Final lap

Once more 'round Silverstone. The fans are on their feet for another home winner.

Lap 51/52

Two more laps for Lando Norris for a dream home win. Two more laps for Nico Hulkenberg for a dream podium.

Is it finally Hulkenberg's day?

We don't want to jinx anything, but surely Nico Hulkenberg is going to do it and grab a podium. Hamilton is not gaining at all and still 6.8s behind.

Lap 48/52 - No McLaren team orders

Norris is gaining on Piastri again, the gap is up to six seconds.

"We're not going to do any team orders," says his race engineer Tom Stallard.

Shades of Haas 2021 as Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman come together, leading to a spin and front wing damage for the Frenchman.

Leclerc is also having a shocker, he just went off again and is down in 14th.

We'd report what Max Verstappen has just said about his Red Bull's handling, but it's all been bleeped out...

He has moved up to sixth, at least, but it's not been an enjoyable afternoon for the world champion.

Piastri is still reeling from that penalty. He says his penalty was unfair and if the team agrees, perhaps they should swap positions? I don't think McLaren are going to go for that.

We've not seen that side from Piastri before. He had a massive snap into Maggotts too.

Lap 45/52 - Norris leads

Norris has pitted on the following lap and is now released into the lead.

Piastri is five seconds behind. Hulkenberg is still looking on for a podium 27 seconds in arrears. Hamilton has seven seconds to make up.

Lap 44/52 Piastri pit

Piastri pits for slicks and serves his 10-second penalty.

It was not a quick stop from Hulkenberg, but he's still well ahead because his inlap on inters was still miles faster than Hamilton's soft tyre lap.

Hulkenberg must respond and does so, mediums for the German. Everyone else is coming in now other than the two McLarens.

Lap 42/52 - Hamilton pits

That's the sign for Hamilton to take soft tyres. Plenty of others are following him in, including Verstappen.

Hulkenberg is holding firm and has knocked Hamilton out of DRS range again.

Alonso is a couple of seconds off the frontrunning pace, but it's not miles away. The crossover is coming.

Meanwhile Sainz is furious at Leclerc for lunging up the inside, with the Spaniard having to take avoiding action. Leclerc also passed the other Williams of Albon the same way and is now eighth.

Russell off

Russell spins off into Maggotts! He keeps going but it's a massive struggle on those slicks.

It's very gingerly from Russell coming out of the pits, and Alonso also had a massive wobble. You've got to think this is two or three laps too early.

Russell: "I think we go for it."

Russell is willing to gamble from seventh, and he is diving in to pick up hard tyres.

Lap 38/52 - Slicks for Alonso

The time is now for Alonso, who comes in for mediums. He saw what Stroll was able to do at the start, and now wants to get his chance to make big gains.

Hamilton is expecting pitstops for slicks in five to 10 laps.

Meanwhile, Lando Norris is doing what he has to do. He's sat two second behind leader Piastri, who has yet to sit out his 10s penalty.

Verstappen moves up to ninth at the expense of Sainz with a straightforward move into the final chicane. His next target is Alonso three second ahead.

Lap 35/52 - Hulkenberg to P3

Through goes Hulkenberg! Is his 239th race going to yield a first podium?

Not if Hamilton gets his way, he soon follows the Sauber through past Stroll.

The battle between Stroll and Hulkenberg has allowed Hamilton to join formation. This should be a fun watch.

Lap 31/52

Hulkenberg is trying to take away third from Stroll for what would be a maiden podium.

We are nowhere near a crossover point to slicks, by the way. With 20+ laps to go we might yet get another stop for fresh inters.

Hamilton gets Gasly for P5. Hulkenberg is up next, three seconds ahead of the Briton.

Lap 28/52 - Verstappen stuck in 10th

Max Verstappen is making zero progress and is sandwiched in between the two Williams cars in 10th.

"I can't even stay with them, I'm so slow."

Remember we mentioned Verstappen's chocie for a low-drag rear wing? It's not helping right now.

Hamilton is past Russell once more and is having a look at Gasly for fifth. He is still on for a podium, you know. Stroll and Hulkenberg are not far ahead.

There's Tsunoda's 10-second penalty for clipping Bearman.
